Will Ferrell turns professional baseballer for the day

Comedian Will Ferrell has always been a baseball fan.

And today he got to play all 10 positions while visiting five different stadiums during MLB Spring Training.

The stunt was part of an HBO special from his comedy website, Funny or Die, which is set to air later this year.

"I'm gonna have my game face on," Ferrell promised.

Here's how he went:

1. SHORTSTOP: OAKLAND ATHLETICS

Ferrell started his day by manning short in the top of the first inning for the A's, but it was uneventful. No balls were hit his way in a 1-2-3 inning. After the half-inning, Ferrell was "traded" to the opposing Mariners.

2. SECOND BASE: SEATTLE MARINERS

Was that Will Ferrell or Robinson Cano? Oh, who could tell. Actually, we all could. It was Ferrell, who played second for the M's in the bottom of the second. Again, no balls hit at him, but he had a nice first pump after the third out of the inning.

3. CENTER FIELD: LOS ANGELES ANGELS

Ferrell finally got to show off his skills in the field, deftly handling a ground ball up the middle. After a major-league crow hop, Ferrell even managed to hit the cut off man, keeping the runner at first. The rest of the inning was uneventful, but at least he maintained his perfect fielding percentage.

4. THIRD BASE COACH/PINCH HITTER/FIRST BASE: CHICAGO CUBS

Things finally got eventful. Ferrell coached third for the Cubs, and performed some schtick, holding up signs for players reading "don't pull a muscle" and "swing as hard as you can," among other things. His presence sparked a rally, which led manager Joe Maddon to give Ferrell an at-bat against Zach Stewart. After looking at two strikes, Ferrell went down swinging. He then made his debut at first, but was pulled after one out and didn't see any action.

5. LEFT FIELD: ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

The opposing Reds weren't taking it easy on the rookie — they hit three balls in Ferrell's direction. He fielded all of them cleanly, but a better left fielder would have limited the Reds on the basepaths. Still, no big blunders.

6. THIRD BASE: CINCINNATI REDS

Things were quiet for Ferrell as he moved to the hot corner. He saw no action with the Reds in the eighth inning. Two more games to go.

7. DH: CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Ferrell looked better in this at-bat, though the result was the same. After working a 2-1 count, he managed to foul one toward first. Ferrell struck out swinging on the next pitch.

8. CATCHER: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Ferrell caught against one batter, but the Giants opted to issue an intentional walk. Ferrell didn't catch the first pitch cleanly, but recovered to snag the final three. He was then removed from the game by Bruce Bochy.

9. PITCHER: LOS ANGELES DODGERS

In the seventh, the Dodgers sent Ferrell to the mound. He faced San Diego's Rico Noel, who was grinning in the batter's box. Noel bunted the first pitch right back at Ferrell, who fielded it cleanly and threw Noel out at first base. Then Ferrell was pulled from the game. One up, one down. 0.00 ERA.

10. RIGHT FIELD: SAN DIEGO PADRES

Ferrell covered right field for the Padres to finish out his 10-position, 10-team day. The action was minimal. He watched a tie-breaking homer fly over his head and yelled at Wil Myers, but that was about it. One special note: Instead of wearing No. 19 like he had for every other team, Ferrell wore No. 20 for the Padres, out of respect for Tony Gwynn.
