Matildas beat Dutch 1-0 in Cyprus Cup

Teenager Larissa Crummer has scored her first international goal to give the World Cup-bound Matildas a 1-0 win over The Netherlands in their Cyprus Cup tournament opener in Larnaca.

Replacing Kyah Simon at the hour mark, 19-year-old Queenslander Crummer rewarded coach Alen Stajcic's faith in the 73rd minute when she latched onto a through ball from Lisa De Vanna and slid her shot in at the far post.

"She has been doing really well in camps and probably the only thing missing so far has been that execution in the final third of the field so it's great for her to come on and score her first international goal," said Stajcic.

"For it to be the winner makes it all the more special."

Stajcic was proud of his Aworld No 10-ranked team's effort against a side ranked one spot below them as they prepare for the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada starting in June.

"It was a tough game. We played against a world class team today, they (the Netherlands) have improved a lot over the past 12 months," Stajcic said.

"We had good patches during the game as did they, the difference was we took one of our six or seven chances and managed to keep them out."

In the other Group B match, sixth-ranked England defeated Finland 3-1.

The Matildas' second match of the tournament is against England in Nicosia on Friday.

In her 50th international appearance, Elise Kellond-Knight led the Matildas out against The Netherlands, a country they had met just four times previously.
