Pistorius negotiating settlement with slain girlfriend's parents

Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius is reportedly negotiating with the parents of slain girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an out-of-court settlement.

Pistorius is charged with the murder of Steenkamp, after shooting her dead in his apartment. He has always maintained his innocence, saying he mistook her for an intruder.

The parents of Steenkamp have been in financial trouble since the death of their daughter and it is being reported by News 24 that they could net 2 million rand ($209,000) from the settlement.

The parents currently run a pub outside Port Elizabeth that they reportedly bought with money made from interviews from foreign media.

The pair are unwilling to say how much they are asking from Pistorius in the settlement.

Pistorius goes to trial on March 3.

He faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years jail should he be found guilty of Steenkamp's murder.

He maintains he shot her through the door of the bathroom with a licensed handgun thinking that she was an intruder inside his home.

Prosectors will argue that he knew it was Steenkamp and he intended to kill her after an argument.
