Weeks after being rejected by Geelong chief executive Brian Cook, North Melbourne have appointed former player Carl Dilena as their new chief executive.

Dilena, who played 23 games for Fitzroy and then later 10 for the Kangaroos between 1989 and 1992, will take up the role in February, eight months after his predecessor Eugene Arocca quit.

Cameron Vale has filled the role on a temporary basis since Arocca's sudden departure just days after the club's humiliating 115-point loss to Hawthorn in Tasmania.

After the Kangaroos failed to land former AFL official and later Football Federation Australia chief Ben Buckley, they turned their attention to Cook.

The Kangaroos were supremely confident they had convinced Cook, who has been credited as the architect of Geelong's massive financial turnaround since 1999, to make the switch.

But last-minute lobbying from former Cats president Frank Costa convinced him to remain at Simonds Stadium.

Now weeks later, North have revealed that Dilena, who is a current board member and former senior partner of KPMG, has won the nod as managing director and CEO.

"We were looking for someone with great leadership skills, senior management experience, a comprehensive understanding of the football industry and someone who also appreciates the unique culture of our club," Brayshaw said of Dilena, who will also remain on the club's board.

"Carl has been a senior partner with one of the world's biggest professional services firms, played football at the highest level, has been a member of our board for the past five years and has chaired the club's finance and audit committee.

"He comes to us with an impressive skill-set and we couldn't be happier to announce his appointment.

"Not only does he understand our business inside out, he has also forged very strong relationships with key people at the AFL, has an intimate knowledge of where we have come from as an organisation, where we need to be headed and how to get there.

"To attract someone with Carl's ability is extremely pleasing as we now have an elite, strong leader in place to drive us forward."
