England's purple rugby kit has critics fuming

There were plenty of double takes when England ran out onto Twickenham to play the Wallabies on the weekend.

Gone was the traditional all white strip that is synonymous with English rugby.

In its place was an all purple outfit, which according to the English Rugby Union "came from the original purple tracksuit England players used to wear and in line with the value we place upon our heritage."

But at 91 pounds each, it seems revenue was as much a motivation as honouring tradition.

The strip was labeled "stereotypical marketing bulls**t" by the Telegraph's rugby writer Brain Moore.

"When players grow up wanting to play for England they think of pulling on the traditional white jersey," Moore wrote.

"It is not just a question of colour; it has subtle, powerful connotations and a significance that nobody who has not played for their country can ever appreciate."

England’s strip, as unsightly as it was, got us thinking about the worst uniforms, jerseys and outfits in sport.
