Williams stands in Pierro's path

If there is one man capable of upsetting Pierro's expected stroll to victory in Saturday's Group 1 Caulfield Guineas then it is surely Victoria's premier jockey Craig Williams.

Williams was the star of last year's spring carnival winning the Caulfield Cup aboard Southern Speed and then the Cox Plate on Pinker Pinker before only suspension cost him the chance to claim Melbourne's big three feature races when he missed out on the ride on French galloper Dunaden in the Melbourne Cup.

However while it is Nash Rawiller who is being tipped to be the star of Saturday's huge meeting at Caulfield - given he rides the short-priced favourites for Gai Waterhouse in both the Caulfield Guineas in Pierro and More Joyous in the Toorak Handicap - Williams is hoping he can upstage Rawiller in the Caulfield Guineas at least.

Williams has picked up the ride on the Leon Corstens-trained Awesome Bro due to the suspension of the horse's regular jockey in Damien Oliver and he believes the three-year-old gelding is one of few horses in the field capable of testing Waterhouse's superstar unbeaten colt.

Awesome Bro has won two and been placed in another two of his five starts and last time around finished a fast-finishing third behind Epaulette - who is second favourite for the Guineas behind Pierro - in the Guineas prelude over 1400 metres at Caulfield on September 30.

Williams said that race, in which Awesome Bro was ridden by Oliver, was an impressive Caulfield Guineas trial.

"He was one of the few horses who hit the line at that Caulfield meeting," Williams told Melbourne racing radio station RSN.

"We have all got to beat Pierro of course but he (Awesome Bro) is going well and he is a lucky pick-up ride for me."

Awesome Bro actually ran the fastest closing sectionals of the day at Caulfield last time out - running home his last 600 metres in a sizzling 35 seconds and he was only beaten by less than a length by Epaulette.
