'Nervous to go to the toilet': Todd Carney's shock revelation

As the NRL battles with its public image following an off-season of poor player behaviour, the controversial former Dally M medallist wants fans to move on from his episode.

“I just don’t understand why people are still so fascinated by it,” he said.

“I know it was stupid, and i’ll live with it for the rest of my life.

“People try and do it next to me in the toilets.

“I actually get nervous to go to the toilet in case there’s a big crowd in there.”

Cancer wake-up call

Carney’s rise to prominence was mirrored by his speedy downfall, but it wasn’t until he was out of the game that he was able to gain some perspective.

The former NRL star also revealed it call from his mum had pushed him to turn his life around.

“She’s in remission now, and she’s happy and positive.”

Now the captain and coach if the Byron Bay Red Devils, Carney is thankful he was able to emerge from the NRL bubble.

“I just thought it was never going to end,” he said.

“I wish, the way I’ve woken up to myself now, I wish I’d done it a long time ago.

“I know I could have achieved more, everyone knows I could have achieved more, but I can’t change that now.

“I’d love to talk about it, not just to rugby league players, not just to sportspeople, I’d love to speak to schools, anyone who will listen.”
