NCAA football betting: Oklahoma delivers all-time bad beat with last-second TD vs. Texas

Not only was Oklahoma’s come-from-behind victory over Texas brutal for UT and its fans, it was brutal for those who bet Texas to cover the spread.

The Longhorns were 3.5-point underdogs but jumped out to a 14-0 lead in less than two minutes of gametime. In fact, Texas dominated for three quarters. Texas led 28-7 after one quarter and had a 38-20 lead going into halftime.

Late in the third, the Longhorns had a 41-23 advantage — but Oklahoma stormed all the way back and delivered an all-time bad beat in the final minute of play.

Oklahoma tied the score at 41-41 with 7:25 remaining and then took a 48-41 lead with 7:10 to play. Texas, though, managed to tie the score with a 31-yard Casey Thompson touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy with 1:23 to go.

That set the stage for Oklahoma to pull out the win. With the point spread set at 3.5, Texas backers were still in good shape. A walk-off field goal from the Sooners would still be a cover for Texas.

Instead, the unbelievable happened.

Oklahoma quickly moved into Texas territory and appeared to be setting up Gabe Brkic — one of the best kickers in the country — for a chance to win the game. The Sooners advanced to the Texas 33-yard line with 10 seconds to play and called timeout. On the next play, Caleb Williams handed off to Kennedy Brooks.

It looked like Brooks would gain a few more yards and get the ball to the middle of the field to make things more comfortable for Brkic. But that’s not what happened. He cruised past the Texas defense for a 33-yard touchdown to put Oklahoma back in front, 54-48, with one second to play.

It was a miracle cover for Oklahoma bettors and a heartbreaking turn of events for those who backed the Longhorns at +3.5.
