Myles Garrett offers to take care of family of 'BBQ Man' David McAtee, who was shot dead by officials in Louisville protests
Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has offered to help the family of “BBQ man” David McAtee, who was shot dead by law enforcement officials on Monday during a conflict adjacent to protests over police violence in Louisville.
McAtee, the owner of YaYa’s BBQ Shack, died from gunshot wounds suffered when police and members of the national guard fired shots near his food stand. Police Chief Steve Conrad said they were in the area to disperse a large crowd and returned fire when they were shot upon.
McAtee’s body remained in the street for almost 12 hours after the incident that occurred around 12:15 a.m., according to reports.
Garrett: ‘This is despicable’
After hearing about the incident, Garrett offered McAtee’s family “anything they need.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Mayor Greg Fischer fired Conrad after it was revealed that officers involved didn’t have their body cameras on during the incident. Both officers were placed on administrative leave. It’s not clear who shot McAtee.
Fischer was reportedly preparing food for protestors before the shooting and regularly fed police officers for no charge.
“David was a friend to many, a well-known barbecue man that nurtured so many people in their bellies and their hearts before," Fischer said Monday. “And for him to be caught up in this, for him to not be here with us, is a tragedy. It's just hard to put into words.”
Conrad was under pressure to resign prior to the McAtee shooting after the death of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor in her home. Police fatally shot Taylor in March when they entered her apartment as part of a narcotics investigation. The Taylor shooting along with George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis fueled the protests in Louisville.
Police claim video shows McAtee as shooter
Louisville police released a video on Tuesday that they claim shows McAtee firing shots at the law enforcement officers.
“The video appears to show Mr. McAtee firing a gun outside of his business door as officers who are using pepper balls to clear the Dino's lot were approaching,” interim Police Chief Robert Schroeder told reporters.
“The video does not provide all the answers.”
The video provided shows surveillance footage from two angles inside and outside of a kitchen presumed to be McAtee’s food prep area. Nowhere in the video does it show the man alleged to be McAtee with a gun, or provide evidence that he shot at police.
“Mr. McAtee appears to fire at the officers and they take cover and return fire, but without audio ... that is yet to be determined,” Maj. Paul Humphrey told reporters.
When asked if police found a gun on McAtee’s body, Humphrey told reporters that “will come out as part of the findings of the investigation.”
