Mum gives birth to twins after discovering pregnancy after virus coma

A mother has given birth after she was given the happy news she was expecting twins after waking up from a 10-day Covid-induced coma.

Danielle Martin from Belfast, Northern Ireland, knew she was pregnant when she was rushed to hospital on March 30 struggling to breathe, but had no idea she was expecting more than one bundle of joy.

"I was put on a ventilator which helped and I was managing – I was struggling to breath and talk – it was terrifying,” Ms Martin told The Mirror.

Doctors initially thought the 32-year-old mother-to-be had pneumonia but after she tested positive for Covid her condition began to deteriorate and she was moved to intensive care where she spent 10 days in an induced coma.

Bryan Green, Danielle’s partner said things quickly deteriorated.

"It is crazy how quick things can take a turn for the worse – one day Danielle was sending me photos telling me about the toast she is eating in hospital and then the next she is in ICU," he said.

Mr Green said at one point doctors told him it would be a miracle if their baby survived and he left his partner at the hospital to take care of the couple’s three young boys.

However when Ms Martin woke up she found out she was having two healthy babies and called her partner to deliver the good news.

"Once she was out of ICU and on a ward, she rang me to tell me both babies are fine – I was like 'both?'" Mr Green told The Mirror.

At first he admitted he thought his partner was still confused from everything that was going on but once doctor’s confirmed they were having twins, he was over the moon.

“Danielle comes out of the coma to be told you have two little miracles growing healthy in there!” a proud Mr Green wrote on Facebook.

He then followed up with the news that he was a father to two “princesses” and mum was happy and healthy.

“Well here is our two little princesses – Ava and Amelia – and doing absolutely amazing! Danielle is also doing fantastic! She deserves a medal! Best feeling in the world,” Mr Green wrote alongside photos of him wearing a mask while holding the new additions to his family, and a smiling Ms Martin beside him.
