Rare Jaguar geared to break auction record

A rare postwar Jaguar road racer is geared to become Australia's most expensive car when it goes under the hammer in Melbourne.

The 1955 British Jaguar D-Type, the only model of its kind in Australia, could sell for up to $8 million at Melbourne's Motorclassica Auction on Saturday night, according to valuers.

Another 30 vehicles will also be auctioned at the Royal Exhibition Building bidder-only event but the classic 1950s racer shapes as the big-ticket item.

"It's the most valuable car to ever go to public auction in Australia and no doubt will set new records on auction night," Mossgreen auction house boss Paul Sumner said.

This particular green machine has been raced around the world, as well as Australia in the late 1960s, and more recently was displayed at the Donington Museum in Britain.

A US-based D-Type sold for $US21.78 million in 2016, the highest auction bounty in history for a British-made car.

Before the auction, 70 Ferraris with a combined value of about $100 million will be on public display.
