Horror crash sends youngster flying at Sandown

Todd Hazelwood has remarkably walked away from a massive crash on the the final lap of the race for grid one at the Supercars Sandown 500.

Tekno's Jono Webb locked his brakes leading into a corner at the end of a 250km/h straight, tagging Hazelwood and sending the Holden driver backwards into the barrier.

Hazelwood is the co-driver for Tim Blanchard in Brad Jones Racing's No.4 Commodore.

"Just devastated," the 21-year-old told Fox Sports after his medical assessment.

"I just can't believe what's happened. We just wanted to get through that race."

Hazelwood said he had never had such a huge crash in his racing career.

"As soon as I got that hit I just knew I was in a world of problems," he said.

"Going backwards into the that tyre wall... it's probably the worst feeling I've ever had. I've been racing for 15 years now and going up in the air like that... I haven't had a rollover like that since I was seven in dirt carts.

"Bit shaken up, I was a bit wounded when I landed but all good now."

Hazelwood hopes to compete in the Super2 race -- where he is a championship contender -- later on Saturday.

"If he feels like he's ok, jumping back on the horse is probably the right thing for him to do," Supercars legend Mark Skaife said in commentary.
