The 17-year-old lost both his legs in a horrific crash in a British Formula 4 race 10 days ago.

A fundraising campaign in his name has since passed $1.2 million, with Formula 1 drivers and other motorsport identities contributing to his future.

Addressing his well-wishers in a Facebook post from the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, Monger has named his sister as a source of strength.

"The one true hero of this tragic event has been my sister, Bonny, who gave me the will to keep fighting!" he wrote.

"(It is) a value that I will continue to hold now... and for the rest of my life."

English racer Jenson Button was one of the drivers to donate to Monger, emploring him to "embrace the love from your family and friends during this tough time".

After thanking the "motorsport family, fans and everyone" who shared messages of support, Monger went on to acknowledge the volunteers, officials and medical professionals who assisted in his ordeal.

"The marshals, medics, doctors, air ambulance and extraction crews at Donington, along with all the staff at Queens Medical Centre, what can I say?" he wrote.

"Without you guys I wouldn't be here today! I will always thank you all for saving my life!"
