More Liverpool woe as Gomez suffers injury

Liverpool's defensive injury woes may well have mounted after defender Joe Gomez left England duty with a knee problem sustained in training.

England manager Gareth Southgate said the severity of the injury was still unclear but added: "What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain. No one was around him when the injury happened."

Premier League champions Liverpool already have centre back Virgil van Dijk out for a lengthy spell with a knee injury, Fabinho sidelined with a thigh problem and right back Trent Alexander-Arnold sidelined with thigh trouble.

Gomez has pulled out of the national squad to face the Republic of Ireland in a friendly on Thursday, ahead of the Belgium and Iceland Nations League fixtures, and has returned to his club for further diagnosis.

Southgate added: "We can't speculate the exact nature of the injury, it's not possible until we have seen scans.

"My immediate thoughts are with him because he has had some difficulties with injuries in the past.

"We are hoping it's not going to be a long-term one. We just have to wait and see."
