Weigh-in drama rocks UFC Perth main event

The interim UFC middleweight title fight between Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero in Perth has been thrown into disarray after the Cuban failed to make weight on Saturday.

Top middleweight contender Romero was supposed to square off against Rockhold for a shot at the title on Sunday at UFC 221 but that is now off the cards after the weigh-in fiasco.

The Cuban tipped the scales at 188.3 pounds on his first attempt - more than three pounds above the limit for a championship fight.

Romero was given two hours to make the weight but despite heading for the saunas, he failed to do so.

The 40-year-old weighed in at 187 pounds on his second attempt, making him ineligible to compete for the interim title against Rockhold.

The main event bout will still go ahead if Rockhold accepts the revised conditions but in the event Romero wins, it will count for very little.

Unsurprisingly, Rockhold was left fuming over the situation.

"I'm a professional. I play this game right, in every sense of the word, I am a f-ing professional," a furious Rockhold said after the weigh-ins.

Rockhold was initially meant to be fighting middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 221, but that title bout was scrapped last month after the Australian pulled out through illness.
