Boxers make crazy $45 million bet on live TV

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr have put $45 million on the line in an outlandish live TV bet ahead of their fight.

The fighters have both agreed to put their entire fight purses on the line for their middleweight bout.

With Canelo rumoured to be making around $36 million from the fight, and Chavez around $9 million, that means the winner will walk away with the whole $45 million and the loser gets nothing.

"Let's bet both our purses?" Alvarez said on the Spanish-speaking US TV show on Thursday.

Chavez Jr then said: "Why would I do that? I'll just bet my money in the casino and get 4-1."

Canelo added: "I'm giving you an advantage on this bet, because I'm making four times as much as you anyway."

The host then interrupted and said: "I know both of you are gentlemen, so how about you guys agree the bet and shake on it here on the show?"

They both then stood up and shook on it, much to the delight of the hosts and crowd.

Mexican pride will be at stake when two-time world champion Alvarez battles former middleweight champion Chavez Jr in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Alvarez brings a 48-1-1 record with 34 knockouts into the May 6 clash while Chavez, son of the legendary Mexican champion, is 50-2-1 with 32 wins within the distance.
