A recent boxing bout in Canada ended in sheer chaos as members of the crowd hurled projectiles into the ring, striking one of the fighters on the head.

Brandon Cook had just beaten Steve Butler when those in attendance erupted.

One patron, reported to be Butler's brother-in-law, threw a metal ice bucket into the ring which smashed into Cook's head.

Cook was left lying motionless on the canvas and was rushed to hospital, but later released.

"I found out it was Butler's brother-in-law that did it, he's still in jail for it. They still have him,'' Cook told Canada's Global News.

"I'm pressing charges because no athlete should ever have to deal with that."

Cook won the fight when the referee called a stoppage in the seventh round. Butler then pushed Cook as the ice bucket came pelting his way.

"All of a sudden he pushed me into the way of a flying object, I thought was a bottle. But it was a big can. It was pretty heavy, it was one of the hardest hits of the fight, to tell you the truth," he said.

"I still can't believe the way that happened. Then fights started breaking out everywhere."
