McGregor takes giant step towards Mayweather superfight

UFC superstar Conor McGregor has taken a giant step towards a superfight with Floyd Mayweather by obtaining a boxing licence in the US.

According to reports in MMA Fighting and ESPN, McGregor has been granted the licence in California.

"He's got a licence today and a federal ID," California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster said.

"He's a California boxer now."

But that seems like only the beginning for McGregor, who is reportedly attempting to gain licences to fight in other states as well.

"After receiving his licence to box in California, McGregor will also be applying for a boxing licence in other prominent states as well. States such as New York, Nevada and Texas are likely at the top of the list as regular destinations for the biggest boxing events in the United States," Damon Martin from Fox Sports US said.

The news comes just days after the Irishman vacated his UFC featherweight title to Jose Aldo, and opted to retain his lightweight crown

McGregor became the sport's first two-division world champion when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York a fortnight ago.

The 28-year-old has continuously called out boxing champion Floyd Mayweather in an attempt to lure him into a bout.

McGregor called Mayweather "afraid" and demanded $US100 million ($A134 million) for a showdown between the two during an appearance in a New York nightclub.

"As far as real fighting - true, pure unarmed combat - Floyd don't want none of this," McGregor said.

"I want the $US100 million cash to fight him in boxing rules because he's afraid of a real fight."
