Disconnect? Giants' fog-centric City Connect jerseys fall flat with fans

Fog. Golden Gate Bridge. Sounds like San Fran, all right.

The San Francisco Giants unveiled their City Connect series jerseys on Monday showcasing the iconic bridge with a fog gradient and orange-on-white background. But it's drawing criticism on social media for a lack of creativity in its inspiration.

Giants reveal City Connect jerseys in orange

The jerseys designed with Nike will be worn during the weekend series against the Washington Nationals and will be taken out for Tuesday home contests the rest of the 2021 season.

Giants executive vice president of business operations Mario Alioto told ESPN the club took the main parts that stood out about San Francisco.

"One of them was the Golden Gate Bridge," Alioto said. "It's internationally known everywhere in the world. It's a sign of welcoming to San Francisco. And as Mark Twain made famous, the coldest winter ever spent is the summer in San Francisco. The fog is what makes our city different."

The Giants told ESPN they decided on the aspects of these jerseys because it was a balance between classic and modern and paid homage to previous uniforms from the days of Willie Mays to today.

"We wanted to strike the right balance between being a little uncomfortable and trying something new," Giants director of retail and authentication Gavin Werner said, via ESPN. "Still having a traditional, foundational look to what we're doing. We think the orange does that. I think it does strike the balance between kind of a classic look along with a direction we've never gone before."

But fans aren't collectively happy with the choice of inspiration.

Fans call out fog design

Fans pushed back on a San Francisco jersey meant to celebrate the city's rich history being based around fog.

The weather pattern is iconic in the city and the chilly days known around the world. But fans jumped into the comments to voice their displeasure that it was the item chosen to represent them.

The City Connect jerseys join those of the Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs honored the state's Hispanic culture with new gold "Las Serpientes" alternative jerseys. The Los Angeles Dodgers will be the final team to release the new threads.
