Minjee Lee's reign as the Evian champion is effectively over after a disappointing third round extinguished her remaining slim hopes at the French major.

Australia's two-time major winner needed a spectacular effort on Saturday's 'moving day' at Evian-les-Bains to get back into the hunt but a two-over par round of 73 left her only drifting further back into the pack.

As the leaders set off at lunchtime, Lee was left at one-under for the tournament, 15 shots behind Canada's halfway leader Brooke Henderson, who then made three birdies over the first 12 holes as she forged clear of the field by four shots.

A spectacular birdie-eagle finish to Lee's second-round 69 on Friday looked as if it might be the spark for the Perth star to launch another remarkable weekend like the one that propelled her to her first major at the Evian last year.

On that occasion, the Perth player went into the final Sunday seven shots adrift but still went on to win in a play-off after a blistering fightback.

But despite her recent fine form, the 26-year-old's hopes were immediately scuppered on Saturday when she suffered a triple bogey seven at the first hole.

Despite then recording four birdies, Lee also made three more bogeys as her hopes of adding to her Evian and Women's US Open major titles were ended, as she was tied for 55th on the leaderboard.

LPGA Tour stalwart Sarah Kemp, whose four-under 68 on Friday left her best placed among the Australian contingent in joint-16th place, was also slipping down the leaderboard, tied for 37th at four under with one hole to play.

Perth's Hannah Green, the 2019 Women's PGA champ, shot a two-under 69 to move alongside Kemp on four-under.

Sydney's Steph Kyriacou was in joint 48th at two under with two holes left to play.
