Michail Antonio opens up on the lifestyle changes aiding his West Ham heroics

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has opened up on some of the changes he’s made to rid himself of the injury problems that have plagued him throughout his career.

Only Liverpool star Mohamed Salah - who has a strong case to be considered the best player in world football on current form - has been involved in more Premier League goals than Antonio so far this season.

Indeed, the 31-year-old scored the winner in an otherwise drab London derby that saw David Moyes’ side beat bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the London Stadium on Sunday, taking his tally to six goals and three assists in eight outings.

Much was made about the club’s decision not to sign a striker over the course of the summer given the added pressure qualification for Europa League football puts on a squad, though Antonio has managed to stay relatively injury-free thus far.

While he did miss the loss to Manchester United at home in September, the Jamacia international has played in all but one minute of their league campaign and was even afforded a rest for Thursday’s night win over Genk in the Europa League, such is the good form of his teammates.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Antonio revealed that alterations to his diet have started to help overcome at least some of his injuries.

“I’ve come to realise I’m no longer the young pup that I used to be,” he said.

“I kept believing that I was. There were certain things in life I was doing that I could have been better with.

“I used to eat what I wanted, I wasn’t the best eater. Now I’ve changed my diet and routine of life. And I’ve noticed since I changed my diet I’ve had less niggles and I’ve not felt my hamstrings at all.”

For West Ham, those changes could lead to the continuity and consistency they will no doubt need from him this season as they look to challenge on both a domestic and a European front.
