How I Met Your Father cancelled after 2 seasons

How I Met Your Father has been cancelled by Disney after two seasons.

The spin off to How I Met Your Mother premiered last year on Disney+, and featured Kim Cattrall as a woman named Sophie in the year 2050 telling her son about her life back in the early 2020s (where she was played by Hilary Duff), when dating was all about apps.

The cancellation comes shortly after Disney+ series Doogie Kameãloha, MD and Disney-owned Hulu series The Great were both axed as part of cutbacks across the company. Deadline, which broke the news about How I Met Your Father, did not state why it was specifically chosen to be cancelled.

With the series coming to an end, we won't find out who the father of Sophie's son is, with the season 2 finale now also serving as the series finale.

As well as Catrall and Duff, the sitcom also starred Veronica Mars' Christopher Lowell, Grown-ish's Francia Raisa, Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma, Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester, and Drake & Josh's Josh Peck.

Guest stars included Judge Judy, Meghan Trainor, Lance Bass and Joey Fatone from Nsync, Paget Brewster and Clark Gregg, while Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Laura Bell Bundy and Kyle MacLachlan reprised roles from How I Met Your Mother.

Patrick Harris returned as Barney Stinson in the season 2 finale in a scene that saw Sophie crash into the back of his car. It was the first (and now only) episode of the series to be filmed in front of a live studio audience.

Creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger said previously that: "We did a creative Zoom with [Neil] to talk about what we were thinking, and that was it. He was game, which was so incredible for us. It was the best way we could imagine coming back."

How I Met Your Father is available on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK.
