Muguruza storms into Shenzhen Open last 16

Sixth-seeded Garbine Muguruza overcame a slow start to beat Chinese teenager Xinyu Wang 3-6 6-3 6-0 in the first round of the Shenzhen Open on Monday.

The world No.35 dropped only one point on serve in the final set, wrapping up the contest in 94 minutes.

"It was not my best start," the 26-year-old Spaniard said.

"I had to come back and bring something different to the match because it wasn't going my way.

"I think she was playing great, but I just had to wait for my opportunities, and stay in the match."

The former world No.1 will next face Shelby Rogers for a place in the quarter-finals after the American beat compatriot Nicole Gibbs 6-3 5-7 6-4.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated Russian Margarita Gasparyan 6-3 6-0, while seventh-seeded Kazakh Elena Rybakina held on to beat local Saisai Zheng 6-2 1-6 6-2.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Kristyna Pliskova, Qiang Wang and Peng Shuai also progressed to the round of 16.
