Melaka rest Williams for Felda but could make decision permanent

Melaka United has taken the decision to rest Eric Williams from his duties as the head coach, just two days before their match Super League match against Felda United.

Speaking to NST, Melaka United Soccer Association (MUSA) deputy president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi informed of the decision and it will not just be for that one match on Wednesday.

"Williams informed me today that he is ill and we subsequently decided to rest him until further notice," said Yusoff on Monday.

Melaka are languishing just one spot outside of the drop zone with one point separating them and Sarawak in 10th place. Despite the creditable 1-1 draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in their last competitive match, it seems thing are not at all rosy in the camp.

"We may make a change in our coaching staff as several players cannot agree with Williams' coaching style. We will not make a hasty decision. I will discuss matters with Williams after the match against Felda and we will take it from there on whether we should look for a new coach," added Yusoff.

In an earlier interview done with Goal after the JDT match, Williams have gone on record to say that while he knew that he was under pressure - he was confident that the draw against the champions as well as changes made during the transfers window - will see Melaka recover and improve in the second half of the season.

One change has already been made with the signing of centre back Jasmin Mecinovic replacing Godwin Antwi following poor performances from the latter in matches from the first half of the Super League season.

For the Felda match, Melaka's team will be handled by G. Selvamohan, the assistant coach. Melaka are drawn in Group C of the Malaysia Cup with Kedah, Kelantan and UiTM FC - however, question marks remains as to who will be in charge of the team when the tournament starts in July.
