Nadal on course for Paris Masters crown

Rafael Nadal maintained his quest for a maiden Paris Masters title by beating fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, a result that sent Argentine Diego Schwartzman through to the ATP Finals.

Nadal recovered from a wobbly start and turned on the engine near the end of the second set to set to overcome Carreno Busta 4-6 7-5 6-1 in their quarter-final.

"I think today was a very good match and semi-finals is a very positive result for me," Nadal, who has now beaten Carreno Busta in all of their seven encounters, said.

If Nadal can with the event for the first time he will tie Novak Djokovic's record of 36 Masters 1000 titles.

Top-seeded Nadal will face Alexander Zverev next after the fourth seed accounted for Stan Wawrinka 6-3 7-6 (7-1) - for a fourth straight win against the Swiss veteran.

Nadal holds a 5-1 record over Zverev but the German won their most recent encounter - in straight sets at last year's ATP Finals.

Carreno Busta needed to lift the trophy at Bercy, and next week's Sofia Open, to deny Schwartzman a spot in the season-ending event at the O2 in London after the Argentine was thrashed 6-3 6-1 by Russian Daniil Medvedev earlier on Friday.

Medvedev took a 3-1 lead before sealing a one-sided opening set when Schwartzman hit his eighth forehand error into the net.

The 24-year-old Medvedev found another gear as he claimed 27 of 28 first serve points and wrapped up an emphatic victory with an ace down the line.

"The level today was really good, so that's a level I want to be all the time," he said.

"But it's impossible in tennis."

Despite the defeat, Schwartzman joined fellow debutant Andrey Rublev of Russia, alongside Djokovic, Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Medvedev, defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and Zverev in the 2020 singles field for the ATP Finals, from November 15.

Medvedev will face Milos Raonic for a place in the Paris Masters final after the big-serving Canadian had to dig deep to beat 22-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

Raonic saved two match points in a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (9-7) victory which he clinched with his 25th ace.
