Frightening video has emerged of Barbosa losing control of his bike while going around a corner at the Interlagos circuit on the outskirts of Sao Paulo during a SuperBike Brazil event.

Barbosa could be seen hurtling off the track before crashing into a metal barrier.

The Kawasaki rider received immediate medical attention but died at the scene.

“The nearest medical team reached Matheus in less than 60 seconds but despite all their efforts he succumbed to his critical injuries,” a SuperBike Brazil spokesperson said.

“The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

“Out of respect to Matheus, and above all his family, the remaining day’s activities were immediately cancelled.”

The race was called off with 10 laps remaining.

“The competition was being held with all the necessary security conditions established by the appropriate authorities,” the spokesperson added.

“The organisation’s priority at this time is to fully support Matheus’ family.”

Tragic trend continues at Interlagos

The tragedy continues a concerning trend at the legendary Interlagos circuit.

Fellow superbike rider Mauricio Paludete died at the same circuit in April last year, while Danilo Berto also lost his life after an accident at Interlagos one month later.

“Today Matheus Barbosa lost his life at Interlagos,” motorsport fan Claudio Legnani wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

“In 2019 another two pilots died on the same circuit and then the authorities said the security measures were apt.”

Tributes are flooding in on social media after Barbosa’s death.
