Tennis player loses the plot in insane racquet-smashing meltdown

Fair to say Mario Vilella Martínez had a bad day at the office.

The World No. 262 has produced one of the all-time tennis tantrums, obliterating his racquet before hurling it at the back fence in disgust.

The ugly scenes played out at an ATP Challenger event in Kazakhstan on Monday.

Vilella Martinez was left incensed when he coughed up a one-set lead against Tomislav Brkić to capitulate 6-1, 2-6, 5-7.

The 23-year-old blew a chance to serve out the match late in the third set, keeping his opponent alive with a love game.

He was then serving at 5-6 when it all went horribly wrong, serving three double faults and completely shanking a forehand on match point to hand Brkic the win.

Cue explosion.

Vilella Martinez slammed his racquet into the clay no less than six times before pelting it into the wall at the back of the court.

“This may be the best racket smashing I’ve ever seen!” said leading American tennis writer Ben Rothenberg.

“The growing cloud of dust around it is especially artful.”

The insane tantrum immediately went viral in the tennis world.
