Marc Guehi thanks Lee Carsley for playing key role in his England rise
Marc Guehi has hailed Lee Carsley for the role he played in his rise to becoming an England international.
Guehi shone at Euro 2024 this summer as England reached the final, with the defender named in the team of the tournament.
Interim Three Lions boss Carsley managed the Crystal Palace defender at Under-21 level and made him captain before his first call-up to the senior side in 2022.
And Guehi has paid tribute to Carsley for helping him develop into the player he is today, saying: “It’s always exciting to play for Lee, he’s definitely someone I respect a lot, someone who I have a lot of admiration for.
“What he’s done for me as a player, how he’s helped me in the younger ages, and helped me improve.
“That’s because of him, that I was able to make that step up to the seniors as well. So it’s been fantastic.”
Carsley is set to bring Guehi back into the England team for their Nations League clash with Finland on Sunday after leaving him on the bench for Thursday’s shock 2-1 defeat by Greece in favour of Levi Colwill.
And on the increased spotlight on England following that loss, Guehi added: “The scrutiny I don’t pay too much attention to, just because I’m not aware too much of it.
“I know we have standards for ourselves in the camp, and we try to set those for ourselves.
“I think it’s important that we put things into perspective. There are loads of senior players in the team, and players in the team have dealt with defeats and difficult moments, so I think everyone’s just riding together and making sure that tomorrow we can go and get a reaction.”
