Manchester City’s Chloe Kelly ‘accepts future not at this club’; ‘I want to be happy again’
Manchester City winger Chloe Kelly has said she “accepts her future is not at this club” beyond the expiration of her contract in June and said her mental wellbeing has been adversely impacted after being “dictated to whom I can and can’t join”.
The 27-year-old’s deal will expire at the end of the 2024-25 season and she has confirmed that her five-year spell at City will not be continued beyond the current campaign.
Kelly, capped 48 times by England’s Lionesses, posted a statement on Wednesday night to be “open and transparent” over her future as she was “no longer prepared to tolerate” the “negative behaviour” displayed to her.
City are open to allowing Kelly to play elsewhere to guarantee playing time and they deem to have only had one appropriate offer to date ahead of the transfer window closing on Thursday at 11pm.
“With my contract expiring in June I’ve accepted my future is not at this club beyond then,” Kelly posted on her social media accounts.
“With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country. Something which has always filled me with such pride and it is a true honour to do so.
“However to be dictated to whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career but my mental wellbeing. The situation has dragged on for too long; it’s disappointing and not right.”
Kelly added in the statement: “Our dreams can be crushed while we live in silence” and that she “just wants to be happy again.”
Her career began at Arsenal before spending five seasons at Everton, from where she joined City in 2020.
Kelly was part of the City squad which won the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup in 2022, and has played 12 times this season for Gareth Taylor’s side this season of which just four have been as a starter.
