Manangoi banned for anti-doping violation

Kenya's former 1500 metres world champion Elijah Manangoi has been handed a two-year ban after missing three doping tests under athletics' whereabouts rules.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) reported on Friday that the ban for Manangoi, who was provisionally suspended in July for the violations, will be considered to have begun on December 22, 2019, the date of his third "Whereabouts Failure".

Manangoi was unable to defend his world title in 2019 due to injury but having beaten the current world champion Timothy Cheruiyot five times, he may well have been one of the favourites for the Olympics.

Manangoi joins a list of Kenyan athletes who have been sanctioned in recent years, including 2008 Olympic 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop, former Boston and Chicago Marathon winner Rita Jeptoo and 2016 Olympic marathon champion Jemimah Sumgong.
