Man United topple Barcelona to advance in Europa League

Brazilian forward Antony stepped off the bench to send Manchester United through to the Europa League last 16, with the hosts coming from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 in their second leg playoff.

The Red Devils progressed 4-3 on aggregate on Thursday.

After a frantic start, Barca were awarded a 18th-minute penalty, much to United's frustration, after Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have fouled defender Alejandro Balde, with Robert Lewandowski just squeezing the resulting spot kick home.

United came out for the second half looking like a different side and levelled through Fred, the Brazilian steering home Fernandes' pass two minutes after the break.

A superb save from goalkeeper David de Gea kept Barca's Jules Kounde at bay, a stop that proved crucial as Antony arrowed a superb finish into the bottom corner 17 minutes from time.

The hosts survived nervy late moments, but saw out a first win over Barca since 2008 - 1-0 in the second leg of the 2007-08 Champions League semi-final - to end a five-game winless run against the Spanish side.

The victory means United remain in four competitions this season, with a first trophy since 2017 on the horizon.

"The belief of the team is always there," Fernandes told BT Sport. "The belief of the fans, they push us through difficult moments.

"We have made great comebacks, the club is made also by that. In the past we have done a lot like this result."

Earlier, Angel Di Maria grabbed a hat-trick as Juventus eased to a 3-0 win for a 4-1 victory on aggregate at 10-man Nantes to reach the Europa League round of 16.

Juventus only managed a 1-1 draw against the French side in the home leg as they eyed a long run in the European competition to boost a miserable campaign in which they have been deducted 15 Serie A points for financial irregularities.

Argentine Di Maria put Juventus ahead after five minutes with a delightful curling strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.

The evening got worse for Nantes after 18 minutes when defender Nicolas Pallois was sent off when he used his arm to stop a another goal from Di Maria.

The 35-year-old Di Maria had no problem converting the resulting penalty.

Di Maria completed his treble 12 minutes from time when he sent in a glancing header and the ball just crossed the line before being pushed away.

In the Netherlands, Luuk de Jong and Fabio Silva snatched late goals for PSV Eindhoven as they beat Sevilla 2-0 but it was not enough as the Spanish club advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

Sevilla held off the late challenge to ensure progress in a competition they have won more than any other team. They have a combined six UEFA Cup and Europa League triumphs, the last in 2020.

In France, Monaco lost 3-2 to Leverkusen to end their tie at 5-5. The hosts were then eliminated after losing a penalty shootout 5-3.

Leverkusen join Sporting who crushed Midtjylland 4-0 to advance 5-1 on aggregate.

Roma beat RB Salzburg 2-0 as Joe Mourinho's men advanced 2-1 on aggregate, while Union Berlin posted a 3-1 victory over Ajax for a 3-1 win in the tie.

Shakhtar Donetsk beat Rennes 5-4 on penalties after their tie ended 3-3 on aggregate, with hosts Rennes winning Thursday's match 2-1.

The draw for the round of 16 will be held on Friday.
