A man has been accused of trying to kill a woman in a domestic violence-related attack on the NSW Central Coast.

Police were called to a Lake Haven property about 9pm on Saturday to reports a woman had been injured.

They found the 56-year-old woman at the intersection of Lake Haven Drive and Stratford Avenue with multiple stab wounds.

Police had been told she was involved in an altercation with a man who was known to her in a Pacific Highway driveway.

When neighbours intervened, she ran off and the man allegedly smashed the windows of her car before also fleeing.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she remained on Sunday morning in a serious but stable condition.

The 68-year-old man was arrested at a nearby home. It's alleged he broke into the property and caused extensive damage with a hammer.

He was charged with a series of domestic violence-related offences including attempted murder, causing wounding or grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder, and break and enter.

He was refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court on Monday.
