'Madu' will debut at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, then on Disney+ March 29
Anthony Madu's inspiring story is the subject of a moving new documentary.
The 12-year-old made waves in 2020 when a video of him dancing in the rain in Lagos went viral online, catching the attention of prominent dancing schools. Madu earned a scholarship to study at the prestigious Elmhurst Ballet School in the U.K.
In the documentary Madu, for which PEOPLE is exclusively debuting the first trailer, the boy's journey is told as he leaves his family in Nigeria to study in England.
"Having never left his home outside of Lagos, Anthony finds himself thrust into a new world where his wildest dreams are suddenly within reach," according to a synopsis.
"His courageous journey is a story of extraordinary obstacles as he searches for belonging and acceptance, a family far away, and unexpected challenges that could impact his future."

Madu is directed by Oscar nominee Matt Ogens and ‘Kachi Benson, who say that "making Anthony's voice heard has been our ultimate drive."
"Ultimately, we are both conduits to allow Anthony to tell his story rather than our observational points of view," the filmmakers say. "Our shared journey is about curiosity and creating an understanding of different cultures through our connection with each other."
Madu debuts on opening night of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Feb. 7, then on Disney+ March 29.
