Maddinson's Shield cricket return cleared

Nic Maddinson has been taking a break from cricket due to personal reasons but is set to return

Victorian batsman Nic Maddinson could return to cricket via the Sheffield Shield on Friday, however Glenn Maxwell and Will Pucovski are yet to be cleared after the trio recently stepped away due to mental health issues.

Strokemaker Maddinson and all-rounder Maxwell both played club cricket in Melbourne on Saturday, with Victoria's cricket team operations boss Shaun Graf telling The Age Maddinson had been cleared and was available to play against NSW on Friday.

Maxwell has not played for the national team since Australia's Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, while Maddinson pulled out ahead of the Australia A tour match against Pakistan earlier this month.

Thought a big chance of inclusion in the Test squad for this week's Gabba Test, Pucovski told selectors during the tour match that he did not want to be considered for higher honours.

Graf said Maddinson, whose issues were non-cricket related, was at a different stage of recovery than the other two.

"I would think Maddinson would definitely be available for selection. He has been cleared to play by our medicos as per normal," he told The Age.

"Maxwell has been cleared to play at this level [Premier] but not cleared to play at the next."

Graf said Pucovski's return would likely come at club level to ensure he didn't rush back prematurely.
