New Lord of the Rings movie faces release delayNew Line Cinema

The upcoming Lord of the Rings animated movie has seen its release date pushed back by several months in a chain reaction of delays at Warner Bros.

Following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire being moved from March 14 to April 12 next year — a consequence of Dune: Part Two taking the Monsterverse latest's March slot — The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is now looking at a December release (via Deadline).

This means the newest film inspired by JRR Tolkien's works and directed by Ghost in the Shell's Kenji Kamiyama will debut in cinemas a whopping eight months after its original slot in April.

The movie will tell an original story focusing on Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, a character introduced in the appendix of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Succession's Brian Cox voices Helm, while Gaia Wise stars as Hera, Helm's daughter who helps defend their people, while Luke Pasqualino voices Wulf, the ruthless leader of the Dunlendings determined to exact his revenge against Rohan for the death of his father Freca (voiced by The Witcher's Shaun Dooley).

The film will also mark the Middle-earth return of Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto, who reprises the role of Éowyn, here serving as the narrator of the film.
