Greatest NRL grand final moments

Souths captain John Sattler instilled himself in rugby league folklore when he played most of the 1970 grand final with a broken jaw. His courage inspired the Rabbitohs to a famous 23-12 victory over the Sea Eagles.

Rival captains Norm Provan and Arthur Summons came together in a momentary, muddy embrace at the end of the 1963 grand final. Captured in an iconic photograph, the moment of supreme sportsmanship now lives on in the form of the modern NRL trophy.

Canterbury's Steve Gearin finished off one of the great grand final tries in his side's 18-4 win over Easts. With five minutes left on the clock, Greg Brentnall raced down Easts' right flank following a superb passing move, before putting up a high kick with three players in front of him. The height and timing were all perfect, as Gearin came through at pace to out-leap David Michael, catching the ball and diving over to score.

Canberra’s victory over Balmain in 1989 is widely considered the best grand final of the modern era. The Tigers’ Ben Elias had a chance to win the game, only for his field goal attempt to ricochet off the crossbar. The match went into extra-time when John Ferguson crossed late. And Steve Jackson secured a 19-14 for the Raiders with a memorable bullocking try.

Steve Renouf scored one of the great long-range tries when he ran 95m to score in the 1992 grand final. The Broncos went on to win 28-8 over St George and claim their first ever premiership.

Set against the controversial backdrop of split competitions, the ARL grand final of 1997 produced one of the most thrilling finales ever. With the scores locked at 16-16, Andrew Johns ignored the conservative option of a field goal, burst down the blind and provided the perfect pass for winger Darren Albert to win the game on the siren.

The Dragons led 14-0 at half-time before Melbourne staged a dramatic second half fightback to draw to within four points at 18-14. Storm halfback Brett Kimmorley bombed toward winger Craig Smith who was caught in a high tackle by Jamie Ainscough over the tryline. Melbourne was awarded a penalty try and went on to claim the premiership in just their second year of existence.

With scores locked, Roosters winger Todd Byrne was try-bound - only to be cut down in spectacular style with Sattler's copybook covering tackle that inspired the Panthers to an 18-6 victory.

Wests Tigers’ Benji Marshall was at the height of his powers in the 2005 grand final, captured perfectly in a single play when he sprinted down the touchline before sneaking home the stealthiest of flick passes, behind his back, to Pat Richards. The Tigers were unstoppable with Marshall at the helm and beat the Cowboys 30-16.

The iconic moment of Manly's 40-0 demolition of Melbourne in the 2008 grand final, Steve Menzies' unlikely try in the corner was the perfect farewell present. The game was Menzies' 349th and last in first grade before he left for the UK Super League.
