Three NRL clubs chasing English giant
At least three NRL clubs are keeping close tabs on the biggest human in the land of giants otherwise known as the Rugby League World Cup final.
Standing at almost two metres and tipping the scales at 115kg, St Helens prop Alex Walmsley has been enormous off the bench for England during the tournament.
After missing the opening game against Australia with a virus, Walmsley gets his chance to match strides with the NRL’s very best big men in Saturday night’s decider at Suncorp Stadium.
7th Tackle understands the Sharks and Eels are watching the 27-year-old with keen interest, while Knights coach Nathan Brown blooded him in the Super League while at St Helens in 2013.
Overlooked for top junior sides as a youngster, Walmsley was a relative late bloomer compared to established English stars James Graham and Sam Burgess.
He does, however, hail from the same Yorkshire town as the Burgess boys – Dewsbury.
Walmsley has a year to run on his contract at St Helens, who would not let him go without demanding a huge transfer fee.
But 2019 is a different story.
Walmsley was coy when asked about interest from the NRL following his devastating performance in England’s quarter-final win over PNG just over a fortnight ago.
He told Channel 7 he was only interested in concentrating on the tournament at hand.
