Shocking vision emerges of violent RLWC street clashes

New vision has emerged of a night of violence in which 29 people were arrested following Tonga's Rugby League World Cup victory over Samoa.

In footage uploaded to Facebook, Tongan supporters appear to come to blows with each other on South Auckland's main road.

Some use weapons in the violent clashes, that occasionally spill onto the road.

Commenters on Facebook identified the perpetrators in the video to come from the Tongan community.

A police spokesperson said the behaviour was concerning.

“This behaviour is not tolerated,” she said.

“Anyone breaking the law will be dealt with swiftly and appropriately by Police.”

Over the weekend, police said 29 people were arrested for disorderly behaviour -- largely in the suburb of Otahuhu -- on Saturday night amid street celebrations.

The crowd of hundreds also caused "major" traffic issues in the area overnight, a police spokesman said.

Footage of the party shows flag-clad cars parading the area and dense crowds on the footpath as fans celebrated Tonga's 32-18 win, along with police units and dogs at the scene.

With large Tongan and Samoan communities in Auckland, the game followed rising tensions in the area.

During the week, groups clashed in south Auckland, including one incident in Otara involving 200 people and six arrests.

Meanwhile, fans at Hamilton's Waikato Stadium received praise from authorities for their behaviour on Saturday night.

The boisterous and energetic crowd brought a great atmosphere but little trouble, inspector Karen Henrikson said.

"It was a really good crowd, with plenty of singing and plenty of colour," Henrikson said.

Officers said they arrested three people for invading the pitch and a fourth for drunkenness.

About 20 people were thrown out for bringing in banned items, but overall the fans brought a positive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, outside the stadium, a security guard was assaulted.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution but was not thought to be seriously hurt.
