Mundine makes successful return to rugby league

Anthony Mundine looks to be serious about a return to the NRL, returning to the rugby league field for the first time in 17 years.

The 42-year-old took part in the annual Koori Knockout competition at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, a footy festival for indigenous players.

Mundine turned out for Namina against the Redfern All Blacks, helping his side to a 26-6 win to advance to the next round on Sunday.

"I got hit late a couple of times," Mundine told 7News afterwards.

"I know I'm going to be a target, this is the hardest field I've ever played on in my life."

NRL stars James Roberts, Tyrone Peachey, Latrell Mitchell, and Andrew and David Fifita are also taking part in the carnival.

According to News Corp, Mundine recently met with St George Illawarra CEO Peter Doust to discuss returning to the NRL.

"I’m training to increase my speed now to prepare," Mundine said.

"I’ll see how I go and then talk to the Dragons again about the off-season."

The former five-eighth played 134 first grade games over eight seasons with the Dragons and Brisbane Broncos, from 1993 to 2000, before leaving the sport to become a boxer.

If Mundine was to play in the NRL again, he would be the oldest player in history, surpassing Billy "Bluey" Wilson, who retired in 1967 at the age of 40.

"I feel that good and that youthful," Mundine told AAP in May.

"If I can get anywhere up to the speed of what I used to be as a youngster, that could definitely be an option.

"I want to do things that have never been done. I want to make it possible."
