Carney fires parting shot at Salford

Todd Carney has fired a parting shot at Salford after coach Ian Watson confirmed the Australian half would be leaving the English Super League club.

The Red Devils' slim playoff hopes were ended by a crushing defeat at the hands of Leeds Rhinos on Saturday morning AEST.

Facing relegation to the Championship, Salford have opted not to sign Carney, who joined the club on a one-year deal, to another contract.

In a reply to a club tweet about his departure, Carney wrote: "No I respected the team but the coach i never wanted to leave but the club asked me to leave to save money."

The 2017 season was Carney's third in the Super League after being sacked by the Cronulla Sharks in 2014.

Recent reports suggested the 31-year-old had interest in an NRL return.

But his tweet that he "never wanted to leave" Salford appears to suggest staying in England was his first preference.

Whether that means Australia was no longer an option remains to be seen.

With most NRL clubs already focusing on 2018, discussions could soon ramp up now that Carney is on the market.
