7th Tackle: Major obstacles loom for Women's World Cup

The logistics of staging an event as big as this year’s Rugby League World Cup cannot be under-estimated.

For the first time a women’s tournament will be included – and that’s brought some unforeseen challenges for organisers.

The most interesting has been around members of the PNG women's team, many of whom don’t have birth certificates, let alone passports that allow them to enter Australia.

A lot of these girls have never ventured beyond their birthplaces in PNG, so it’s no surprise the paperwork is missing.

But with the tournament only four months away, it’s an urgent administrative conversation that’s now taking place between RLWC bosses, sponsors and the Government.

All is looking positive for the girls – and once they arrive they’ll also be treated to the sights of Sydney including Blue Mountains, Bondi Beach and the Harbour Bridge.
