7th Tackle: Myles of good luck for Melbourne

Superstitious types will tell you it’s because their mid-season signing, Ryan Morgan from Parramatta, didn’t play in the decider.

The Storm’s last three grand final winning teams have featured a player who joined the club mid-season – Clint Newton (2007), Brett Finch (2009) and Richie Fa’aoso (2012).

It’s a remarkable quirk of history the club will be hoping to keep intact after signing out-of-favour Sea Eagles stalwart Nate Myles this week.

There were issues between Myles and Manly that don’t relate to football, which hastened his departure.

The player’s management was in talks about finances and third party deals with Sea Eagles officials for months before this week’s release became became a formality.

The only hitch with Myles leaving so suddenly were his pet bulldogs.

They had to be temporarily left behind and are currently in the care of former North Sydney hooker Mark Soden.

Currently sidelined with an elbow injury suffered in Origin I, Myles could be fit to debut for the Storm against another of his former clubs, the Roosters, next weekend.

He certainly wasted no time impressing the staff with his toughness.

A club physio with an AFL background checked out his elbow on Tuesday and decided he’d need another month or two out.

“No way mate,” Myles fired back. “We’re built tough in rugby league, I’ll be right next week.”
