Souths set for scrutiny over Burgess concussion

South Sydney's concussion protocols are likely to face more scrutiny from the NRL over an incident in last night's loss to the Roosters.

Rabbitohs captain Sam Burgess took a shoulder to the head while trying to tackle Isaac Liu.

He played on for several minutes but was later ruled out with concussion.

South Sydney's decision to keep him on the field is at odds with the $350,000 worth of fines handed out last week.

The NRL whacked the Titans, Dragons and Knights for their handling of head knocks in the early rounds of the season.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire said Burgess's symptoms were clear.

“Sammy was obviously concussed there," Maguire told reporters after the game.

"The assessments were made and I think he came off after they assessed and had an understanding of what went on on the sideline.

“And we checked him again at halftime and the doctor said he won’t be going back out, so that was the call.”

Burgess fulfilled his role as captain by attending the press conference with his coach.

He was somewhat aggrieved at being held back but understood the NRL's position.

“I felt alright on the field but the medical staff, after reviewing the footage, thought I should leave the field," the Englishman said.

"I followed their instruction and then unfortunately failed the test at half time. It’s there to protect the players so it’s disappointing but it’s what we have to do now as players.”
