Punches thrown in big WCS bust up

Tempers have flared in the World Club Series match between the Brisbane Broncos and the Warrington Wolves as a late Brisbane fightback failed to materialise.

In rare scenes punches were even thrown among the mass of players at Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Ex-Knight Kurt Gidley was in the thick of it, shaping up to Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough.

Former Dragon Mike Cooper was the first to throw a punch, unleashing a few haymakers at Broncos youngster Jai Arrow before other players managed to settle the situation.

The referee issued both teams with warnings after the scuffle.

Warrington eventually upset Brisbane 27-18 to become the first Super League team to win a World Club Series match since the competition was expanded in 2015.

Inspired by former NSW skipper Gidley and England five-eighth Kevin Brown, the fired-up Wolves led 24-6 at halftime and held on doggedly to seal the win over Wayne Bennett's side.
