'I think Parramatta fans are entitled to be bitter'

A number of rugby league greats are unhappy about Kieran Foran resuming his career with the Warriors, while Eels fans are absolutely fuming.

The NRL announced on Wednesday that Foran would be able to play for the Warriors from Round 3 of the 2017 season after months of speculation.

The former New Zealand Test playmaker was being scrutinised by the NRL after his fall from grace and exit from Parramatta midway through last year, but finally had his Warriors contract rubber-stamped.

The controversial move has caused anger among Eels fans, and club great Eric Grothe Sr says they have every right to be bitter.

"I'm sure Parramatta fans will be a little bit bitter about it", Grothe told 7News.

"He was signed by Parramatta and he had some time to go and that's where I think he should be."

Former NSW Origin and Kangaroos halfback Brett Kimmorley expressed similar disappointment.

"I've never been a huge fan of people being able to quit and move on and then do a little course on welfare and they're allowed to come back and play."

Retired Roosters and Rabbitohs star Craig Wing was equally as unimpressed.

"People have done silly things but they do amazing things on the field and it's all forgotten."

Fans took to social media on Wednesday, fuming about the development.

Following the breakdown of his long-term relationship and overdosing on prescription medication, Foran took leave from the game citing mental health problems.

He was also scrutinised over his association with former brothel owner Eddie Hayson, a key figure in police investigations into match-fixing allegations.

Foran has consistently denied his relationship with Hayson had been improper but has cut links to satisfy the league he is fit and proper for a NRL returned.

"With Kieran over here, that association (with Hayson) is no longer there," Warriors managing director Jim Doyle said.

"From the NRL's point of view, that's a big thing. They don't want players associating with colourful people, whatever you want to call it."

He has had strict conditions placed on him by the NRL in a bid to avoid a repeat of past problems.

Foran is likely to make his first appearance for his new side on Friday, March 17 against the Bulldogs - who are coached by his former mentor Des Hasler.
