Dragons make massive play for Ben Hunt

St George Illawarra are preparing what could be a million-dollar bid for out-of-contract Broncos halfback Ben Hunt.

Josh Massoud revealed on 7 News that the Dragons are leading the race to bring Hunt to Sydney.

Hunt has spent his entire career in Brisbane but is yet to commit to the club beyond his current contract.

The 2017 season is his last under a deal signed in October 2014.

The Dragons face at least one more year of rebuilding for a tilt at the finals, with the contracts of more than half of their squad ending at the end of the year.

Hunt, 27 in March, would be the leading half that St George Illawarra have been seeking.

Hunt finished fifth in the Dally M Medal voting in 2014 and 2015 before his stellar 2016 season contributed to the Broncos reaching the grand final.

Incumbent St George Illawarra half Gareth Widdop is out of contract at the end of 2017, with Drew Hutchison set to be given a role in first grade from 2018.

Hutchison made his debut late in the 2015 season but is set to miss most of the 2017 season after tearing his ACL last month.
