Steve Matai set to retire on 229 NRL games

Injury-plagued Sea Eagles centre Steve Matai looks set to retire despite having a year to run on his contract, according to Fairfax Media.

Matai's management are reportedly in discussions with Sea Eagles management to reach a termination agreement.

Despite receiving numerous lucrative offers to leave the club, Mate will retire a one-club player, on 229 NRL games.

The aggressive centre built an outstanding career on punishing defence, constantly ironing out much bigger players.

However his fearless style led to many injuries, particularly in the shoulders and neck.

Matai's manager, Gavin Orr, said he was "working through" details of the departure with the club.

Mate won two premierships with Manly, and appeared 10 times for the Kiwis.
