Rugby League fans in Papua New Guinea lost their collective minds as they welcomed the PM’s XIII team to Port Moresby.

The stars of the NRL were greeted by thousands of screaming fans lining the streets around the capital, as they made their way onto the team bus.

Excited fans mobbed the players as they made their way onto the bus.

Supporters hung off overpasses, perched on walls and took up almost every spare centimetre of available space to get a closer look at their sporting heroes.

Fans took up any vantage point possible to see their heroes.

The wild scenes were reminiscent of the The Beatles tours during the band’s heyday, with the players lapping up the ‘rockstar reception.’

All this came 48 hours before the match between PNG and the PM’s XIII was even scheduled to begin, so we can only imagine what the excitement levels will be like when it gets underway.

With the hysteria that always accompanies the annual match in PNG, it’s clear that rugby league truly is the national sport of the Pacific Island nation.
