Bizarre scrum penalty everyone thought was long gone

Referee Ben Cummins was applauded on Sunday when he blew a rare scrum penalty against the Panthers in their clash with the Eels.

Penrith had the feed in the second half scrum when players were left stunned by Cummins' call.

As it turned out, the Panthers only had five players in the scrum rather than the required six.

Peter Wallace, who packed in at second row, picked up the ball at the back of the scrum as if he was playing lock, but the eagle-eyed Cummins spotted the shortage and awarded Parramatta a free kick.

"This is a great moment", Andrew Voss said in commentary. "I tire of referees calling out, 'you've got to get a sixth player into the scrum', teaching, instructing teams how to pack scrums."
