Ma'u the latest Eel to chase unpaid deal

The ripple effect of Parramatta's salary cap storm has impacted yet another player; and it's arguably their most damaging forward. Kiwi terror Manu Ma'u has been chasing an unpaid third party deal for months without success, which is no surprise given the Eels' current predicament.

Last week his management lost patience and contacted the Roosters to gauge their interest in signing the 27-year-old second rower. Although they've been in the market for engine room reinforcements, the Roosters were taken aback by the approach. Ma'u is contracted until the end of next season on a rather modest deal that probably doesn’t reflect his current value.

It's believed the outstanding third party deal is worth around $20,000. Despite these issues, we can't see Parramatta granting Ma'u a release – particularly after all the work that's been done to rehabilitate him from a stint in prison across the Tasman.

However, an upgraded deal is not unreasonable. That might have to wait until the club's salary cap position and punishment is made clear within the next fortnight.

Wallace extension could sever Segeyaro

When the Panthers appointed Anthony Griffin as coach last October, there were immediate fears for the playing future of former captain Peter Wallace. How quickly things can change. Shown the door by Griffin at the Broncos, Wallace is firmly back in favour after his impressive adaption to the No. 9 jersey.

It now seems a certainty that Wallace’s career will be extended another season thanks to his new-found utility value. But with current halves Jamie Soward and Te Maire Martin on the books, not to mention ongoing talks with Eels five eighth Corey Norman, where does that leave off-contract rake James Segeyaro?

It would appear Segeyaro's fortunes have nosedived in comparison to those of Wallace. The Kumul hooker was hoping to make his comeback from a broken arm on Monday night against the Roosters, only for Griffin to tell him to wait another week. He's now been kept on ice again for Sunday’s big clash against the Sharks, with Wallace to start at hooker again.

To say Segeyaro is mystified would be an understatement. It doesn't auger well for his future at the foot of the mountains. Should Penrith not offer an extension, look for the Titans and Dragons to enter the equation.

Boy oh boy...Georgie sues the Eagles

Former Manly assistant coach Steve Georgallis has decided to sue the club in the wake of his sacking last year. A member of Geoff Toovey's staff, Georgallis was contracted until the end of this season. He was shown the door when Trent Barrett hired his own assistants and expected a full 12-month pay-out worth around $120,000.

However, Manly believe they were entitled to axe Georgallis with three months' notice. Now back at Penrith, Georgallis has hired a lawyer – Grant Butterfield - to pursue his unpaid contract. Butterfield is the brother of ex-Knights hard man Tony Butterfield, who made a habit of kicking heads while RLPA boss last decade.
